EU Mandates Google to Share Search, Android Tools with AI Competitors

Published on

The European Union is pressing Google to open up its Android platform and search services to greater competition through a series of new regulations. These measures are part of an ongoing effort to enhance competitive practices within the digital market, providing more opportunities for rival companies to thrive.

As stipulated by these regulations, Google is required to make 11 features of its Android system accessible to competing artificial intelligence developers. This move aims to allow other AI assistants to utilize important device capabilities and respond to voice commands in a manner akin to Google’s Gemini assistant. Users can expect these changes to be reflected in a forthcoming Android update slated for release in July 2027.

In addition to expanding access to Android features, the new rules mandate that Google share specific anonymized search data with AI firms and competing search services. This initiative is designed to empower these companies to enhance their search-based offerings. However, before sharing any data, Google has the right to verify that interested companies meet necessary cybersecurity and data protection criteria. This data-sharing provision is anticipated to be implemented starting January of the next year.

The European Commission has emphasized that the regulations include measures to safeguard user privacy and device security while simultaneously fostering increased competition in AI and online search domains. Despite these assurances, Google has voiced its concerns, suggesting that the new requirements could potentially compromise user privacy and security, even though the company has put forward proposals aimed at addressing the regulatory body’s concerns.

These regulatory actions are a component of the European Union’s broader Digital Markets Act, which is designed to mitigate the market dominance of large technology firms and offer consumers a wider array of digital service options.
