Published on

In the wake of a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has stepped forward with a significant humanitarian relief effort. The earthquake, which centered near San Jose del Palmar in Choco province, resulted in over 300 fatalities and thousands of injuries, while also causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. In response, Colombia declared a state of emergency to manage the crisis.

As part of a comprehensive $10 million relief package, the UAE has delivered crucial humanitarian supplies aimed at aiding the recovery of affected communities. This assistance includes food, hygiene kits, and cleaning equipment, selected based on the urgent needs of those impacted by the disaster. The supplies were sourced from markets in Paraguay before being transported to Colombia for distribution, highlighting a coordinated international response to the crisis.

The relief initiative was personally directed by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who extended condolences to the victims of the earthquake and reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to supporting Colombia’s recovery efforts. This gesture of solidarity underscores the UAE’s role in international humanitarian assistance, focusing on providing timely aid to disaster-stricken areas.

Colombian authorities have expressed their gratitude for the UAE’s support, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis. As recovery efforts continue in Colombia, the aid from the UAE stands as a testament to global solidarity and the shared responsibility of nations to support one another during natural disasters.
