Market Growth: Rising Demand for Dry Eye Treatments Among Women

Published on

Experiencing dry, itchy, or burning eyes is often attributed to fatigue, lack of sleep, or prolonged screen time. However, if these symptoms persist, they might indicate dry eye disease, a condition that impacts comfort, vision, and daily life. Women appear to be more susceptible to this ailment due to hormonal fluctuations, aging, screen usage, and specific health issues.

The eyes rely on a delicate tear film for protection, lubrication, and clear vision. Dry eye disease arises when the eyes fail to produce adequate tears or when tears evaporate too swiftly, leading to irritation and symptoms like burning, redness, discomfort, and blurry vision. Paradoxically, watery eyes can also be a symptom; when the eyes become extremely dry or irritated, they may produce reflex tears, though these do not offer the same prolonged relief as a healthy tear film.

Several factors put women at greater risk for dry eyes, notably hormonal changes. Hormone shifts throughout life stages—such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, perimenopause, and menopause—can affect tear production and the glands that maintain the tear film’s oily layer. The risk heightens with age as natural tear production diminishes. Additionally, lifestyle factors contribute to the condition; extensive use of computers, phones, and tablets can decrease blinking frequency, leading to uneven tear spread and increased evaporation. Certain health conditions and medications can exacerbate the issue. Conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other autoimmune diseases may heighten vulnerability to dry eye symptoms. Medications, including antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure drugs, and hormonal therapies, can also impact tear production. Environmental factors, such as air conditioning, windy weather, dust, and prolonged screen time, can further aggravate symptoms.

The indicators of dry eye disease can vary, but common signs include burning, stinging, redness, irritation, a gritty feeling, excessive tearing, light sensitivity, eye fatigue during reading or screen use, blurred vision, and trouble wearing contact lenses. These symptoms often worsen after prolonged screen exposure, insufficient sleep, or time spent in dry, windy, or air-conditioned conditions.

To alleviate discomfort from dry eyes, certain everyday practices can be beneficial. The 20-20-20 rule suggests looking at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. Regular blinking, managing environmental conditions, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and consuming a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fruits, vegetables, and nuts can also help. Persistent symptoms should not be ignored, as they might not just be effects of aging or screen use. Consulting an eye-care professional is advisable if discomfort continues despite lifestyle adjustments. Depending on the severity and cause, treatments might include lubricating eye drops, warm compresses, eyelid care, or other targeted therapies. For individuals with conditions affecting eye health, paying attention to ongoing symptoms is particularly crucial, as early intervention can prevent discomfort and improve the comfort of daily activities like reading, driving, and using digital devices.
