Tourism Surge Boosts Economic Growth in El Salvador and Guatemala

Published on

The tourism sector between El Salvador and Guatemala is witnessing significant growth, solidifying its status as a key regional travel market within Central America and influencing tourism dynamics throughout the area. In 2025, El Salvador welcomed 4.1 million international visitors, continuing a trend of robust tourism expansion. Among these visitors, approximately 1.5 million hailed from neighboring Guatemala, reflecting a strong cross-border travel interest.

Concurrently, the number of Salvadorans traveling to Guatemala surpassed 1.75 million, underscoring the appeal of regional tourism and short trips across borders. This surge in travel is largely driven by road, contrasting with traditional tourism patterns that rely heavily on international air travel. In fact, nearly half of El Salvador’s tourists arrived by land, with Guatemala seeing even higher numbers of overland entries.

This shift has spurred what experts call “exploration tourism,” where visitors seek brief excursions to explore beaches, mountain towns, cultural landmarks, and natural attractions. Guatemalan travelers heading to El Salvador are particularly drawn to the surf beaches of Playa El Tunco, El Sunzal, and El Zonte. Meanwhile, Salvadoran tourists often visit Guatemala’s volcanic areas, hot springs, and mountainous locales.

The increase in tourism has been facilitated by enhanced border infrastructure and streamlined migration processes, which have minimized travel delays between the two nations. This burgeoning tourism corridor is boosting economic activity in border regions, benefiting restaurants, hotels, and local businesses. Officials anticipate that overland tourism will continue to rise through 2026.

This regional tourism boom is also creating competition for Costa Rica, traditionally reliant on long-distance travelers from North America and Europe. Analysts note that Central America is being increasingly marketed and experienced as a cohesive multi-country destination, prompting tourism operators to offer regional travel packages to attract visitors.
