While Daly’s absence is significant given his versatility and prior commendation from Borthwick, the 33-year-old remains in contention for selection when the broader World Cup squad of 33 players is finalized.

Atkinson is now a strong candidate for the inside-centre role, while Opoku-Fordjour’s capability to operate on both sides of the scrum enhances his appeal. Despite being omitted, Courtney Lawes and South African-born centre Benhard van Rensburg are still in the mix for selection. Lawes has returned to England, and van Rensburg made his international debut over the summer.
