The Sheinbaum administration has reported substantial achievements in its security operations, including the arrest of tens of thousands of individuals, significant seizures of weapons and drugs, and the dismantling of numerous clandestine drug laboratories. Moreover, Mexico has expedited the extradition of high-profile criminal suspects to the United States. Officials have also observed a marked decrease in fentanyl trafficking, a key concern for both nations. This cooperation signifies a departure from the policies of the López Obrador era, which saw the closure of a US intelligence unit in Mexico and the imposition of stricter controls on foreign security personnel.

Relations between the two countries reached a low point after several contentious events during López Obrador’s presidency. The arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos in 2020, coupled with disagreements over organized crime investigations, strained the bilateral ties. Further tension arose in 2024 when reports surfaced suggesting connections between drug-trafficking funds and López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these allegations did not lead to formal charges, they further eroded trust between the Mexican government and US authorities.

Despite the progress in cooperation, President Sheinbaum has consistently emphasized the importance of respecting Mexico’s sovereignty and the principle of mutual respect in bilateral relations. Her administration has voiced criticism of what it perceives as attempts by US officials to influence or create divisions within Mexico’s security leadership. As a result, while both nations are working towards enhanced coordination against organized crime, Mexico remains steadfast in asserting that any intelligence collaboration should align with its sovereignty and national interests.
