Rubio Pushes for Reliance’s Increased Role in Venezuelan Oil Sector

Published on

In a bid to enhance energy cooperation between the United States and India, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is focusing on encouraging India’s Reliance Industries to increase its processing of Venezuelan crude oil. Speaking in Mumbai, Rubio highlighted the potential for Reliance to not only refine more Venezuelan oil but also explore opportunities for production activities in Venezuela. This initiative aims to capitalize on Reliance’s existing capabilities, given its operation of the Jamnagar refining complex, one of the largest in the world with a capacity of approximately 1.4 million barrels per day.

While Reliance currently imports Venezuelan oil, it does not engage in oil production in Venezuela. Rubio’s discussions with the company will center on addressing potential challenges and identifying opportunities for expanding its presence in the Venezuelan oil sector. This move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen commercial ties between Washington and New Delhi amid ongoing trade negotiations.

The discussions come at a time when the US administration has made a significant decision to waive additional tariffs linked to India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. This decision, aimed at facilitating progress in trade talks, has been met with criticism from some US lawmakers who advocate for stronger economic pressure on Russia due to its actions in Ukraine. Nonetheless, the administration plans to review its tariff policies in the coming weeks.

India’s growing economy relies heavily on crude oil imports, with more than 85% of its requirements met from abroad. Expanding the import of Venezuelan crude oil could provide Indian refiners with more diverse and reliable energy sources. Furthermore, potential investments by Reliance in Venezuela’s oil production could pave the way for deeper bilateral energy cooperation.

During his visit to India, Rubio is also scheduled to meet with senior government officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and business leaders such as Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani. These meetings underscore the US’s efforts to bolster economic and energy ties with India while exploring collaborative opportunities in the Venezuelan energy sector.
